How Rabies reaches the brain

Rabies is a relatively rare but very serious infection which can attack the brain and the nervous system.  It is not found in the UK mainly though it is found in a very small number of wild bats, but it is prevalent throughout the world particularly in Asia, Africa and South and Central America.  If you are travelling to any of these locations, & are at risk of being infected and looking for rabies vaccination in Camberley then contact Touchwood Pharmacy.

Rabies is transmitted from the saliva of an infected animal and is most commonly caused in humans by a bite, often from a dog.

How does rabies reach the brain?

Rabies is initially transmitted from the bite of an infected animal, usually into the muscle of a human.  The rabies virus uses the nerve cell network rather than the bloodstream to speed its passage to the brain where it multiplies and is almost always fatal.

What are the symptoms of rabies?

  • ·         Confusion, strange thoughts, hallucinations
  • ·         Muscle spasms or convulsions, excessive movements combined with agitation
  • ·         Aggression or irritability
  • ·         Seizures
  • ·         Weakness leading to paralysis

The rabies vaccine

If you are travelling to a part of the world where rabies is widespread then you should consider having the vaccination particularly if access to medical care is limited due to location.

Rabies prevention

  • ·         you should always take care even if you have been vaccinated against rabies
  • ·         minimise your risk of exposure to animals whilst you are abroad in particular activities such as running or cycling – it is not always possible to tell if an animal has rabies
  • ·         take medical advice immediately if you are bitten or scratched by an animal even if you have had the rabies vaccine

The best way to protect against rabies is to have the rabies vaccine and understand all the rabies prevention advice which is available.  To book an appointment to have the rabies vaccination visit our website https://www.touchwoodpharmacy.com/
