What are the different types of liver function tests?

Your liver is an incredible organ that performs several functions to keep your body running smoothly. It performs over 500 different functions. One of its most important jobs is to break down food and convert it into energy. It also regulates the chemical levels in the blood and creates bile, a substance that carries away waste products from the liver.

The liver also:

  • Helps fight off infections
  • Cleans the blood of bacteria and particles
  • Neutralises toxins
  • Regulates several hormones
  • Produces enzymes and proteins needed for blood clotting
  • Metabolises drugs

Getting regular liver function tests can help keep you informed on how your liver is doing. Liver function tests are diagnostic tests that measure the levels of proteins and enzymes in your blood. By analysing these substances, any liver damage and disease can be detected and treated.

Types of Liver Function Tests

There are several types of liver function tests, including:

  • Alanine transaminase (ALT): ALT is an enzyme found in the liver that helps with the process of turning proteins into energy for your liver cells. When the liver is diseased or damaged, more ALT is released into the bloodstream and levels increase.
  • Aspartate transaminase (AST): AST is an enzyme that helps metabolise amino acids. Like ALT, AST is usually found in lower levels within the blood. Increased AST levels may be a sign of liver damage, disease or muscle damage.

  • Albumin and total protein: Albumin is one of several proteins made by your liver. Your body needs Albumin to fight infections and to perform other important functions. If your levels of albumin are too low, you may have liver disease or liver damage.

  • Bilirubin: Bilirubin is a substance that passes through the liver before being released from the body through your stool. Elevated levels of bilirubin might indicate liver damage or disease or anaemia.

  • Prothrombin time (PT): PT is the amount of time it takes for your blood to clot. If you have elevated PT levels, you might have liver damage. Some blood-thinning drugs can also elevate PT levels.
